   First impressions: The KEYCHRON C3 PRO RGB is an excellent keyboard. They took everything I didn’t like about the original KEYCHRON C1 RGB (case, switches, housing, sound, not hotswap, no software, lighting difficult to control, resetting itself on PC restarts) and fixed it, or made it better. I am a huge keyboard collector (Northgate OmniKey, IBM Model M Industrial, Vortex, vintage Cherry, vintage IBM Model M, IBM Model F XT and AT, Unicomp, many many more), and the C3 is the keyboard sitting on my desk. Mods: I plan to replace the stock Keychron red switches* with vintage CHERRY MX BLACKs (they’re on order), and I’ve done a quick change out on the caps (stock shine-throughs to the PMK DSA Rainbow set). Thinking about removing the internal foam to make the keyboard a bit louder. Be careful if you plan to mod your C3… the clips that hold the case together can be easily broken. Conclusion: This is a lot of keyboard in a small package. I’m enjoying the per-key, north-facing RGB LEDs, NKRO, and so many other aspects. It’s too early to comment on a complaint I’ve seen in other reviews, where some users report nonregistering keys. I’ve owned several Keychrons and that’s never been a problem with of any of my previous keyboards from them. *The stock switches feel good, better than Gateron Pro reds… my suspicion is these are rebranded Kailhs, which is excellent… much, much nicer than Gateron–going strictly off of feel.

   Having owned the steelseries alex 7 tkl which is $100, (still own) this keyboard is awesome. The brown switches provide excellent feedback and it’s quiet and satisfying to type on. The build quality overall is pretty good considering it’s plastic, and the RGB functions are pretty cool too. (I set mine to red as seen in the photo above). For the money this keyboard is you’re getting a fantastic deal. 5 stars

   I ended up replacing the switches and keys. I kept the red keys from the keyboard. Looks and feels great. I like the keyboard for a few reasons. It’s cheap, feels like it will last a while, size is great. Additionally, it has 3 ways to manage the cable. You can have the cable come out the left, center or right side. This is a very easy to use keyboard, changing the switching is an optional item, the original switches respond just fine. I used a 5 pin purple v3 switch instead. It’s easy to connect with standard usb and performance is great.

   I now have two of these! At first I ordered the non-hot swap with red lighting for $27 and the next morning decided I wanted the hot swap RGB for $40. It was too late to cancel the first before it shipped. I was so happy with the RGB version I decided to keep the cheaper one as a replacement for my Logitech MX Mechanical at work. The Logitech is a nice keyboard, but the switches and typing experience on the Keychron is far superior. I did a side by side with a coworkers custom build and the Keychron keycaps were a bit more wobbly. To be expected from a cheap build I suppose… still this far exceeds my expectations for the price and am very excited to have my first mechanical board to start playing around with new parts. I love the look of the RGB board with simple white lighting (shown in my picture) and am excited to play with VIA and QMK more down the road.

   I bought this as I was beginning to explore the world of mechanical keyboards once again (they’re what I grew up with and subsequently forgot about until recently). I’ve tried a few now, most far more expensive than this one, and I keep coming back to the C3 Pro – it’s kind of minimalist with an RGB flair, the brown switches have a nice feel and sound, and it doesn’t break the bank. I think it’s the perfect starter keyboard…it’s hot swappable so you can mess with switches later if you like, but it’s also a really solid keyboard in stock form. I do wish there was a version with the number pad but I may have to bump up to the V6 if I can’t eventually get over missing my trusty numbers.

    Update: My replacement keyboard arrived and the new keyboard is much improved – the out-of-the-box experience is what it should be. The overall sound profile is very good, though the spacebar sounds more plasticy when it bottoms out as compared to the other keys. The right arrow keycap is still a bit shorter than the others – I don’t know if that’s a common style for TKL keyboards but none of my other keyboards are this way. Not at all a serious negative – it just feels weird to me. And, the keyboard is still not recognized by usevia.app – can’t connect to the keyboard and the test function assumes it’s a full-size keyboard, not a tkl. Original Review: I was seriously considering the C3 Pro for a while, but when I saw a hot-swappable RGB version for $10 more – shut up and take my money! The look and feel is fantastic, but wow, seems like they have some QC issues with the first batch. From bad to worse: The arrow keys, particularly the right arrow key, has a sunken feel. Using a straightedge atop the first row, I can see the right arrow key is about 1mm or so low. Did someone place the wrong profile keycap here? Interestingly, the CTRL key on the other side of the keyboard is also a bit low. The usevia.app online utility will not connect to my keyboard. The Authorize Device option lists my C3 pro, but it will not connect, all I ever get is that rolly bowtie chip animation. The keytester portion of the site does work, though it shows a 100% layout, not my 80% layout. Worst of all, the Up Arrow, Down Arrow, End, Home and Scroll Lock keys make this keyboard almost completely un-useable. Pressing any one of these keys will also press every key to the right and left. For example: – When I press the up arrow key I get: ZXCVBNM<>? – When I press the Home key I get this: `1234567890- plus a trip to the end of whatever page I’m viewing/working with. I have a replacement on order and will revise this review once it arrives, but for now this was not worth the wait.

    Sounds good write out of the box. Looks wonderful, and is very durable. Definitely can last you for a long time. Best part about its functionality is that it can fit any switches, that means modding this is wonderful for first time modders. Typing speed is also great if you’re used to TKL keyboards. Stabilizers are wonderful out of the box and come pre-lubed.
