   This is tough. The Q6 is a keyboard with seeming solid build quality. It has QMK and is supported in VIA, which makes remapping the bad factory mappings really easy. Want the media keys on the spares above the numpad? Done. Absolutely necessary for when you change the keycaps out for anything other than stock. The backlight: Basically useless with shine-through legend keycaps. Keychron decided to mount the switches in their designed orientation with the LED on the bottom half of the key. Most other keyboard manufactures mount RGB switches upside down (with the LED on top) for likely a few good reasons: The legends on most shine-through keycaps are on the top half of most keycap sets, and a blindingly bright LED will still illuminate through the switch and keycap without causing unnecessary glare off the switch mounting plate. With the backlight on the Q6 at full brightness, not only is there a lot of glare from light bouncing off the underside of the keycap and then the mounting plate, there is also a direct line of sight between the bare LED’s on the PCB through the hole in the key switches and mounting plate. This is extremely annoying at any brightness because the bare diodes ‘twinkle’ if your head shifts at all, and intolerable at max brightness. This is extremely disappointing for such an otherwise nice keyboard. Otherwise, this is a rather tall keyboard, with no adjustable fit. You will absolutely need a wrist rest. The distance from a desk to the bottom edge of the keyboard is 7/8″.

   I put alternative keycaps on it., the YMDK Double Shot Shine Through OEM Profile in Carbon. It has a more traditional key cap shape like the IBM keyboards and it’s slightly lower pitch sound when typing. The original keys are not shine through and I really wanted that. There’s tons of options for keycap colors form this brand and they fit perfectly. This keyboard feels much better than both Razer and Corsair keyboards that I’ve recently had, and the lights, macros, and key bindings are easily set up on the website usevia dot app. It’s nice to not need any software on my machine. I found icue to offer more RGB customization, that’s the software standard with Corsair, but I haven’t explored alternatives for programming this yet. I generally only want a solid color anyway. Build. The quality is really outstanding. It’s heavy, double gasket design with foam means the whole PCB is kind of on a shock mount. The board itself is very rigid, the Q6 line has the machined metal frame and it’s a pretty big difference in feel from plastic boards. The cable is decent, but it’s not a wound cable and there’s no typing rest, so some people may want a few accessories for it. Keycaps. I’ve tried Razer’s equivalent to the brown switch, This Gateron G Pro brown, and Cherry MX brown. This is my favorite out of them. It’s more like a linear key than the others, comes pre lubed, and the pressure to actuate does not increase much as the key is pressed. The tactile force is smoother than the other brands but that might just be because it came factory lubed and the other brands do not come that way. I don’t want to manually lube keys. Customization: These key caps can be changed easily, the switches too. The keyboard came with tools for both. It has easily accessed screws to even open the board, along with some replacements. This board is designed to be fully user serviceable and customizable. It’s popular enough that the brand and third party offer alternative parts for almost every aspect of this board. So it seems a good way to get into custom keyboards if you don’t want to doa whole DIY kit but think you’re curious enough to change things later. The board is solid enough that I think it will be around for a long time even if I end up customizing everything from here on out. Knob: It has one, and it feels much better than other knob I have tried on gaming keybaords. It is also customizable with different knob colors. It’s also possible to rebind it to do different things but I find volume up and down and Mute are pretty useful. Macros: So far the macro programing has been awesome. I set up the whole number pad area to be stratagems in Helldivers 2 and it’s perfect. A Stream deck would probably work better but I found those to be very fragile.
