   After several months of researching custom mechanical keyboards, Keychron kept coming up as the recommended entry-level keyboard. After trying different layouts and switches, I settled on the TKL with browns. It sounds fantastic and feels awesome to type on right out of the box. As someone who doesn’t care much for RGB, I thought the south-facing LEDs wouldn’t be too much of an issue. However, the lack of ANY shine-through keycaps is strange on a $100 keyboard, especially one with RGB. What makes this even worse is that Keychron sells a keyboard with shine-through keycaps for south-facing LEDs, and it’s on one of their cheaper models. If they brought shine-through keycaps for south-facing LEDs for the ANSI keyboard layouts, then this keyboard would be a 5/5. Even with that one minor annoyance, this keyboard is an excellent bang for your buck, and I’d highly recommend it if you’re new to the custom mechanical keyboard scene.

   I was looking for a good mechanical keyboard to replace my 10 year old one. After checking out many reviews that highlighted this keyboard, I decided to buy it. It did not disappoint. It fit all my needs: simple design, high quality, good value (most other recommended keyboards cost around $200), smooth typing, low noise. It also had many features that pleasantly surprised me like the customizable RGB LED lights, extra keycaps, Mac/windows mode, 3 modes of connection.
   The only thing I didn’t like is the high height profile. It sits high for my preference and my wrists are not used to it. Maybe most non-low profile mechanical keyboards are like this nowadays.

   Keyboard feels great. The option for wired, bluetooth, and wireless dongle is awesome. Makes it easy to swap between home/work/server control. I think the real unexpected standout feature of this keyboard, and i presume keychron in general as a brand: to configure the keyboard, you go to a website instead of downloading yet another annoying “hub” program. The website detects your keyboard and you can do all the customization you want without downloading a thing (macros, rebinds, profiles, colors, etc) its great.

   I bought this for my daily driver Linux setup (pop-os). It’s really straight forward to get the basic functionality working. However, the LED’s were another story – I don’t quite know how I got them to work, but they’re working now. And now that they’re working, I love this thing.

   Also, beware that in order to update the firmware for the Keyboard you would need Windows or Mac – there’s not a native Linux based app.

   El teclado visualmente es precioso, su sonido es perfecto y el tacto de los Gateron Red es excelente, lamentablemente recibí una unidad con defectos en las teclas ESC y F1. La tecla ESC no funciona bien, esta solo reconoce la pulsación si se presiona fuerte (algo que prefiero no hacer, es incómodo). La tecla F1 inició con el mismo problema, luego empezó a funcionar relativamente bien pero ahora registrar la pulsación múltiples veces aunque solo se presione una vez. Aún estoy a la espera de una solución por parte de Keychron, aunque al haber buscado más información (Reddit principalmente) encontré que sus teclados suelen tener bastantes problemas físicos, por lo que estoy pensando seriamente en buscar el reembolso si no se llega a una solución, en cualquier caso actualizaré mi reseña. ACTUALIZACIÓN: Keychron ofreció enviar una nueva PCB pero este proceso se hizo fuera de go-keyboard.com y al encontrarme yo en Perú (y ellos no hacer envíos directos a mi país fuera de go-keyboard.com) no fue posible proceder con esa solución, me indicaron que inicie el proceso de devolución, es una lástima porque sinceramente me agradaba este teclado, lamentablemente aún tienen problemas con el control de calidad y fui uno de los que recibió un producto con fallas. ACTUALIZACIÓN 2: En un último intento de saber qué sucedía con mi teclado opté por desarmarlo para ver la zona de los switch de las teclas ESC y F1, para mi sorpresa la tecla ESC jamás encajaba bien debido a que el PCB se dobla con facilidad en esa zona, por lo que el switch jamás podía colocarse correctamente, solo era posible desarmando el teclado para presionar el switch mientras se sostenía el PCB. La falta de topes debajo de esa zona ocasiona que el PCB se doble en el espacio vacío, deberían corregir eso para que no le suceda esto a nadie más ya que el teclado funcionar perfecto ahora, esa mala conexión de la tecla ESC ocasionaba errores en la tecla F1 que registraba una pulsación varias veces. ACTUALIZACIÓN 2 (Ver adjunto 2, foto) En la parte trasera del pcb, entre el ESC y F1 hoyo que debería unir el pcb y el acrílico como en otras zonas del pcb, ese hoyo NO ESTÁ BIEN HECHO, es demasiado grande y además VINO SIN TORNILLO, los tornillos extra que trae la caja NO SIRVEN pues el hoyo es demasiado amplio Lamentablemente sigo teniendo problemas de reconocimiento múltiple de pulsaciones de forma aleatoria. NO COMPREN ESTE TECLADO, NO VALE LA PENA.

   I like the sound and layout but boy is this a defective product. This board started double typing a week out of the box. Google searches result in this being a known issues for Keychron boards. Tried taking out the switches and cleaning them and reseating them and it only helped for a week or so before the issues started up again.

   Avoid, there are comparable other boards from other brands without this issue.

   I can’t believe how many features are packed into this keyboard for the price. It’s super comfy to type on, I love that it has a wireless option, and the design is great. The one issue I’ve had is that sometimes it “errors out” and loses its programming (lights, macros, etc). Not a huge deal, but annoying to deal with.

    I’m changing the rating from 4 stars to 2 after spending two weeks communicating with their custom support, doing random things that they suggested without solving any problem. Specifically, I noticed two issues: 1. under 2.4GHz wireless connection, some key remap does not work. 2. Some advanced keys such as macro and SpaceFn keys will malfunction occasionally and you need to power-off and restart the keyboard. The custom support first asked me to record videos for both behaviors. Then they asked me to change key switches, reset keyboard, installing different toolboxes to refresh different kinds of firmware. And eventually they told me that issue 2 is a bug of the QMK code that they cannot fix. And they keep asking me to refresh different firmware for issue 1 but I am tired of trying random things. If they knew how to fix the issue or plan to replace defective units it won’t take 2 weeks. Below is my original review. This keyboard checks all the boxes for a good productivity keyboard, in outstanding ways, except the backlight. 1. Premium typing experience. The banana switches I got offer crisp tactile feedback yet are smooth and relatively quiet. Both the typing sound and the keycap material feel much more solid than the common membrane keyboards. 2. Versatile connectivity. It supports USB-C and USB-A wired connections, USB-C and USB-A 2.4GHz wireless connections with dangles directly stored in the keyboard, and Bluetooth with 3 devices. It also offers a physical switch to switch between Mac and Windows layout if you use both. I also connect it through Bluetooth to my Android phone, it makes typing messages a breeze. 3. Powerful customization without bloated software. Unlike Logitech and Razer keyboards that use drivers that constantly eat up system resources, the firmware on this keyboard can be customized through a webpage and you don’t need to install anything on your computer! It also offers way more customization possibilities than other keyboard drivers. Besides common features like key remapping and customizable shortcuts, you can do fancy things like tapping Ctrl and Alt to copy and paste while still using them as Ctrl and Alt in key combinations; toggling to a function layer that realizes the numpad in the alphabet region; etc. The only complaint I have is the backlight. It uses the “south-facing LED”, which is only good for side-printed shine-through keycaps. It works terribly with the keycaps that come with the keyboard. Since I can touch type, so non-shine-through keycaps are no problem. However, I do want the backlight to outline the key clusters in a dark environment. However, as shown in the photo, the light from the function keys and the navigation cluster are blocked by the keycaps when viewed from a typing position. The shift key also blocks the Caps Lock indicator under that key. If you increase the backlight brightness to make them more visible, then the LEDs from the alphanumeric region would be uncomfortably bright since they directly shine into your eyes. According to my research, south-facing LED works poorly with conventional top-printed shine-through keycaps, so if you want to change the keycaps, the selection is limited. Moreover, despite of having indicator light for Caps lock, the connection mode, and the battery level, there is no indicator for the function layers. So you don’t know if you are in the Mac or Windows mode, or on your customized numpad layer, game layer, etc. Ironically, they offer shine-through keycaps and layer indicators on their budget C-series keyboards. It is weird that Keychron would offer less features on their higher end models. For professionals like me, features are always more important than premium materials.

    Out of the box, my first impression was that this keyboard is a little plasticky and cheap-feeling. However, the design and build is still excellent and it is heavy enough to stay put on your desk, which is what matters. The Gateron Jupiter Banana switches are rad. They’re like brown switches, but way smoother without the scratchiness you sometimes feel with browns. The actuation force is a little higher, but whatever, they feel great. They don’t have any click sound, so you won’t be bothering others in the office while playing Apex on your lunch break. These switches are fine for both typing and gaming. Thes ones I got are 3-pin, but there are holes in the PCB to accommodate 5-pin switches if you want to upgrade later. The keyboard uses the seemingly-ubiquitous plastic plate/foam sandwich design for both sound and touch dampening. The keycaps are OEM profile, but have a more rounded design versus the typical OEM keycap. This rounding of the caps really makes a difference when it comes to comfort. I like it. The only downside is the keycaps aren’t shine-through. Connection-wise, you can go for wired, Bluetooth or 2.4GHz wireless. Two(!) 2.4GHz wireless dongles are included, one for USB-A and the other for USB-C. It would be great if you could control which one the keyboard connects to, as this would let you switch between two computers. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work. The keyboard just uses whichever one it sees first. These dongles can be updated via the Keychron web-based updater app. More on that in a minute. Physical switches are used to configure the main keyboard settings like connection mode and Mac/Windows key behavior (i.e. swapping Win and Alt keys). This is way better than having to remember some Fn key combination, as is the case with many keyboards. A big reason to go with this keyboard is the customizability of the key layout and/or using open-source QMK firmware. Keychron also has a nice web-based customization app that you can use directly within a Chromium-based browser like Chrome or Microsoft Edge. This is really nice, as you’re not forced to download and run any shady standalone configuration programs from an unknown source. You can pretty much remap all the keys to whatever you want using just the web app (the keyboard must be connected in wired mode to do this). As mentioned, you can also use the web app to update the 2.4GHz USB dongles, although I could only update the USB-A one. The updater failed when I tried to update the USB-C one. Regardless, the web update feature is awesome. The bottom line is this is an excellent keyboard. Pretty much everything is done right here. The only thing that would have made it better is an aluminum chassis, but I’m sure that would have increased the price too much. You can’t go wrong here.

    The keyboard feels solid, especially when one actually types. I have brown switches and like the feel; other reviewers have been fond of the bananas. The three connectivity options (2.4 GHz dongles, blue tooth, cable) provide versatility, and it even comes with 2 dongles – usb-A and usb-C. The legs have two positions.

    I have two gripes, neither a deal breaker. The keyboard weighs a bit more than the website indicates, my scale shows 900 grams; this only matters for travel. Also, there is effectively no caps lock indication, which I find a nuisance. The LED under the caps lock key does change color when the function is engaged, but this is hidden by the nearby shift key, and can’t be seen while typing.

    All the keys are backlit but not shine through; this is clearly indicated in the marketing documentation, so while I would prefer shine through, I did get what was advertised.
