   Update – After a week this keyboard refused to work. I had to unplug it and then plug it back in, wait about 5 to 10 minutes and then it would start working again. Real inconvenient to say the least. Then yesterday, it just stopped working completely. Nothing I tried fixed the issue. Shame because I liked it. But now I’m using my old keyboard again as this one is bound for the garbage heap. Original review – I was a little shocked when this arrived. It doesn’t have a keypad on the right like my previous gaming keyboard did. So it’s taking me a little bit of time to get used to it. Smaller than my previous keyboard and wired (which I prefer). Comes with the tool to remove the keys. Speaking of the keys, they aren’t as loud as my old keyboard when I type. Love the slow, wavy motion of the RGB lights. It’s a great keyboard for me and my needs. I’m happy with it.

   Let me start off by saying, PLEASE do not be thrown off by my one star off. Having already tried the Epomaker/Aula branded gasket mounted “creamy” keyboards, I feel too spoiled for this alternative option. Have a listen for yourself as I have made a comparison between the Royal Kludge TKL and the Aula/Epomaker TKL. Notably, there is a difference in switches. The Aula/Epomaker has Leobog Reaper Switches, and the Royal Kludge TKL has a “creamy linear switch” as advertised in the listing…but the question is.. which one? Presumably, it sounds like they’re using a standard creamy switch made by Royal Kludge just like their standard linear reds, blue and brown switches. There is no particular brand of switch they appear to be using. In essence, for a gasket mounted TKL keyboard, they did a fantastic job. I have various gasket mounted TKL keyboards, and the build is incredibly similar to most, but keep in mind this is also Royal Kludge. They are known for budget builds and costs. For $69.00, you are MUCH better off buying a more well known brand for the same price than this model. It is built and it sounds really nice, but it is not $69 nice. The RGB standards are an additional positive feature to the board that don’t require a special software application to program them in the keyboard. The manual will guide you through all of the various backlighting and RGB options to choose from. I also think it’s really cool they have lights on the side of the keyboard as well. It actually reminds me a little bit of the Glorious GMMK model with the lights on the sides. There are several pre-set lighting modes AND standing still RGB light colors to choose from as well. The volume knob will never not be a huge plus from me. I am one of those people that NEEDS a volume knob because I am constantly adjusting the volume for when I am gaming, watching Twitch streams, and need to frequently adjust the volume when someone at the house is talking to me, when I need to take a quick call, etc. Although I would not personally buy this for $69, you could very well feel differently than me. Hopefully my video, picture, and overall review will help you make your decision on what is best for you.

   I got this for my husband who is a heavy keyboard user for his job. This is his review. Don’t forget, this is not wireless and doesn’t have ten key. “I don’t really play videogames on the computer, so the review is from someone who wanted a neat keyboard for when they work. I knew of mechanical keyboards but had never messed around with one before. I have to say I get it now. Everything related to the keys is very satisfying. They make a nice click, the action feels very smooth, and they bounce back very quickly. It could be in my head, but it felt like I was able to navigate through Excel faster with this keyboard. The lights are a neat addition and were easily adjusted using the built in short cuts. The keyboard is heavy which I believe is a good thing if you were using this for gaming. It is all plastic, but it doesn’t look or feel cheap. There isn’t anything I could think of that I would change, but remember I am not a keyboard enthusiast. I would strongly recommend it to someone who wants a bit of flair for work.”

   This keyboard gives enjoyable feedback and I like the TKL layout with a volume knob, which leaves more space on the desk. I will be using this on a desktop setup, so the wired only connection was all I needed, no additional money wasted on the battery and a wireless dongle to lose.
   VIA software is easy enough so far and no software running in the background.
   The package includes four extra switches and a keycap/switch puller.
   The negatives for me relate to the RBG functionality. Minus a point because the RGB backlighting is south facing, the keys do not shine through and the switches are not transparent. My old gaming keyboard could be read in a dark room, this one, not so much. The software does not appear to have preloaded profiles available that auto load when I launch a game like Logitech and others include.
   A good keyboard and good value. RK has a black version, however on go-keyboard.com they don’t appear to sell it. It was on the cover of the box I received and it looks better than this white version and it has side lit shine through key caps, oh well.

   This felt a little cheap. There are better options for the money. It was lighter than I expected, which took away from the perceived quality and made it feel toylike. Using it just didn’t do it for me, the sound and feel were both very plasticky.

    The RK website literally has a driver download for the VIA software. However, that isn’t compatible with this keyboard (per their customer service). If you don’t want to remap the keyboard I’m sure it’s fine though.

    RK definitely has some nice keyboards, and this is a good addition to their lineup. Many users are migrating from the bulky, traditional, full-sized keyboards to smaller keyboards for their home office or gaming setup. Frankly, if you don’t frequently use a numpad, you’d be doing yourself a favor to pick up a 75% or smaller keyboard for your desk or mobile workstation. The knob on this RK keyboard is an excellent replacement for the traditional pause button. Using the knob as a volume control is an great feature to have on any keyboard, and it works nicely here on the R87. The keyboard itself is a nice entry into the 75% range of keyboards. Its keys are thoccy, but a little hollow sounding. Its keys are not hot-swappable, but the knob is. The cream colored R87 is an odd color choice in my eyes, but that is purely a personal preference. You’ll retain some of the versatile keys that are missing on the 60% keyboards (Print Screen, Home, Delete, etc.), but retain the key size and spacing that is comfortable when typing. If you’re looking to clean up your desk and reduce the size of your keyboard, this is a nice entry into the world of smaller keyboards.

Pros: Key puller included so you can swap keys and switches Switches are lubricated for an excellent feel, like you might expect from an expensive keyboard No flex Bright backlight Double-shot keycaps The “volume” knob is nicely knurled metal, and it’s swappable The keys feel and sound absolutely great My only complaint, and it’s very minor, is that you need to press a key combination to set the keyboard into Windows mode. Just once, but you’ll want to do it if you have Windows. I’m confident that you’ll love this keyboard!
