the steelseries engine that runs all of there devices does not work with windows 8.1. they have pages and pages on the FAQ that ask how to get it to work and the main response they have is to open task manager and stop steelseries engine. i got this for gaming but clearly they company is not keeping up with the software portion of the build. i will not buy this again and would not recommend to anyone.

A major reason for getting this keyboard was the large L-shaped return key shown in the product image and on the packaging – on both the standard and MOH inserts. It is present on neither key insert.
PROS: The optional wrist rest (another reason for purchase) is fine. The build quality is beyond sturdy; weighs more than my cat. There may not be a better designed and more professional looking keyboard on the market. I can plug my USB mouse and tiny speakers into it and have only one cable going towards the case. I only paid $39.99 for mine on sale.
CONS: There is no backlighting (steelseries logo lights up, that’s it). There wasn’t supposed to be, but that’s a personal preference. There are some, but not too many, extraneous keys cluttering the perimeter of the board. The large rotated L-shaped return key is a lie.

Great keyboard.. Just wish they didn’t stop making them. If you upgrade the firmware. Don’t use Windows 8, the upgrade software doesn’t like it. I use a win 7 and it worked.

Could not use it until firmware updated, Firmware tool did not work with windows 10. Had to update on a Windows 7 Computer, then it works fine on my Windows 10 computer

I was extremely excited to get this product, unfortunately, SteelSeries was unable to get the drivers to work properly on Windows 8.1 and 10. It felt very nice and was of great build quality. It was comfortable to type on, but unable to fulfill its duties. SteelSeries was extremely helpful. I contacted their support and got a quick response. They offered me an exchange for a similar item that will work with Windows 10.
Edit: Before sending it in, I tried to update the firmware on a Windows 7 PC, and now it works! It’s great! I love it!

As a Zboard owner I had high hopes for the Shift. Pulled it out of the box and everything installed fine. They advertised backwards compatibility with Zboard keysets yet none of mine worked. Using the software I was able to create custom profiles and set the keys however if i tried to change the color or the font of the keys, the software crashed. Another bug is when you set your hotkeys in a particular profile, they are changed in EVERY PROFILE! Mechanically the keyboard works good but the software has lots of bugs. I contacted tech support and initially received an answer telling me my case was being forwarded to the correct department. Three weeks later I never got a response. This keyboard has alot of promise but it definitely doesn’t deliver on alot of them. Until they fix the bugs, deliver on backwards compatibility for Zboard keysets, and improve tech support, avoid buying the Shift!!! I’m sending mine back for a refund!
