Typo Negative Verified Buyer – 16 March 2024

Reviewing R65 black/gold In some context you could probably say this is not that bad of a keyboard. It comes down to how competitive the market is these days, features like gasket mounting are becoming common for less money, and really great keyboards are more affordable each day. I feel this board does not quite live up to the current price. Short version: Positives: color scheme, metal knob, decent if you aren’t used to more premium keyboards. Cons: feels cheap, “thin” typing feeling, board is very flexy and flimsy, at a price range that is starting to compete with much more premium products. Badly “lubed” switches. No wireless. I keep a list of all the mechanical keyboards I have owned or tried over the years. I am up to at least 20 at this point, plus separate switch types. I am fully into the hobby at this point and get the itch to try a new keyboard every few weeks. Overall I would say I am not very impressed by this keyboard, but I think it will depend on how many other boards you have tried. For someone new to mechanical keyboards, I can see this R65 being seen as a good product. It’s certainly fine as one of your first steps away from average membrane keyboards. On the other hand, anyone who has tried higher quality stuff at this point will probably be underwhelmed. They did a great job designing these boards because in terms of visual appeal I wanted one right away. Both the black/gold and cyan look good to me. This is probably the main positive of the keyboard that helps weigh against some of the negatives, it looks very good. Upon opening the package, my immediate reaction was negative, based on how light and flimsy the board feels, as well as not being impressed by my very first key presses. This is definitely more “clack” than “thock” sounding and it’s pretty high-pitched and cheap sounding. I almost decided that I would be packing it back up and returning it just from that impression. Good keyboards will almost always create a positive reaction as soon as they come out of the package, and I was feeling negative about this one. Later on, I decided to at least plug it in and try typing, which improved my opinion a little bit. With headphones on, the keyboard doesn’t sound quite so thin. And again, this black/gold color scheme really looks great on my desk. I still felt that this has an extremely “thin” overall typing feel, either from the switches or the overall build, but now I was leaning more towards keeping it. Finally, I popped off some keys and switches, and opened the switch housings, to see almost no evidence of lube. I went back to the product page to make sure that the switches claimed to be factory lubed, and that’s what it says. This must be some extremely thin lube. ONLY with a completely dry finger, if I touch the stem of the switch, can I see a faint glistening on my skin that tells me there is barely some lubricant there. Looking at the switch stem or the rails in the lower housing with the naked eye, you will barely see any indication of lube. These switches must have received a single drop of ultra thin lube on some of the stem rails and that’s it. I think with a more standard and appropriate level of switch lube, some of this thin typing feel would be improved. So I feel these can just barely be advertised as lubed switches, and they pretty much feel like they are dry when typing. This is probably the largest negative for me, feels like being lied to. Wireless doesn’t matter to me so I often forget to even review it. It wasn’t until I initially drafted this review that I realized this board is also wired only. Considering I already made the argument that this board is not competitive at the current price, that needs to be mentioned as well. I have had multiple other boards for even less money that include a battery and 2.4ghz + bluetooth. I am almost always using USB anyway, but in terms of reviewing this keyboard, another negative. This is a gasket mount design and there is some flex if you press down hard enough, but nothing that you will really notice when typing. Enough to keep things isolated and not transfer your typing force through the keyboard in a harsh way. Despite being all plastic, I think the housing looks nice. The knob feels pretty good to use, it is cool to the touch so it is real metal. I never have minded a plastic keyboard before as long as they are done well, I do not think the extra weight and heft of a metal keyboard housing is always necessary or beneficial. I don’t mind a lightweight board that is easy to move around your desk or throw in a backpack. But you can twist this board in your hands very easily, and you can press down in the center when the keyboard is on your desk and make the center housing bend down to touch your desk. A board that can flex that much would benefit from a rubber foot under the middle too, not just at the 4 corners underneath. There are 2 stage riser feet which is a nice feature to have. They did take care of small details like foam in the gaps under the spacebar. The keycaps feel pretty thin with a hollow sound. I’ve seen some reviews suggest they are actually ABS and not PBT, but I won’t make that accusation. I probably won’t use the keyboard long enough to see if the keys start getting shiny because they are cheap. I do have one poorly aligned key legend, my DEL key is off center. RGB is okay, not the brightest I have ever seen (this is normal with non shine-thru keycaps), but the board does have some effects patterns that seem different than the usual patterns. Sometimes the actual color of your switches will affect the RGB and in this case you get the peach color of the Cream switch housings making it difficult to get a white background color and affecting some of the other colors. Seems like switches should just stick with neutral colors so they stop tinting the RGB. As I started to think up my negative-leaning review, I paused for a second to remember that I would generally consider RK a budget brand and that maybe I was being too harsh about a cheap feeling plastic keyboard. But, to the contrary, I feel like RK is now entering a price level where some scrutiny is deserved. If this was thirty five or forty dollars, that would be different. But we are now at or very near (ten dollars away) from keyboards that use much better materials and feel much more sturdy, with a better typing feel. For a little bit more money I would say try to get a Hi75 and you will end up with a much more premium keyboard. Only go with this if being very light weight and plastic is a positive for you. As I finish this review, I am uncertain about keeping this keyboard. I am right on the line where despite how much I enjoy the color scheme, I am not very impressed by the rest of it. And again I am not just making an unfair comparison to keyboards with metal housings or things like that. I have had many plastic keyboards, Akko, Redragon, etc. This R65 still stands out as feeling cheaper to me. I change my mind from moment to moment, I may just barely justify keeping it. Maybe if I actually lube the switches, or change them entirely, it will feel better. I would be more positive about this board at a lower price.

Overall this keyboard is very fun to type with. I’ve been realizing I am much more happier doing my work on my computer now than i was with my other keyboard. This one feels great, the switches are smooth, lubed, and actually so satisfying to type on.
Why I am ditching my $300 dollar razer keyboard for this one: You do NOT need to download a software just for the RGB functions to work like my other keyboard. I need all the processing power I can get whenever I am either gaming/making music, or coding, and using razer’s software was making it nearly impossible for me to really enjoy my gaming experience with their products.
Overall, with the fact that I don’t need to download any additional software and just plug the keyboard in, geek out over the sound whenever I type, and just be overall happy about the feel and responsiveness of the keyboard while gaming.

I believe if you haven’t had the best experience with major brand keyboards like I have, I would most definitely pull the trigger on this one and give it a shot, you can always return it, but I promise you, you won’t.

Did a short video of my hubby typing away. I love this keyboard. It is not Bluetooth, but plugged right into my Mac and worked perfectly! The volume knob synced instantly and works great. If you want to change the RGB and you have a Mac and cannot download Royal Kluge software, use FN+|\ ( Next to the delete key) to cycle through.

This keyboard is amazingly well made. It’s heavy and solidly built. I’m coming from a ReDragon 60%, which is also a good mechanical keyboard, but I couldn’t deal with the lack of arrow keys on the 60%. This Royal Kludge 65% gives me back my arrow keys, plus a few more, but is still compact. The keys feel really good to type on. There are still a few things I don’t like, which I’ll outline below. But they are minor gripes: The RGB only lights beneath the keycaps. I wish it lit the letters as well. You can probably fix this by purchasing new keycaps. If you don’t work in the dark (which I like to do), then this won’t be an issue for you. The keycaps’ text is large and stands out very well on the keys (I have the black version). This keyboard doesn’t have dedicated function keys. To type F1..F12, you hold down the Fn key and press one of the number keys on the top row. There is no F1, F2, etc., printed on the keycaps. It’s obvious what they are, so it’s not a problem. What is an inconvenience is the lack of media icons on the keycaps. So, if you use Play and Pause media keys a lot, you’ll struggle to remember which key it is. To access the media key functions, you must toggle the top row into media mode with Ctrl-Fn. Once it’s toggled into media mode, it stays that way until you toggle it off. Once it’s toggled into that mode, just pressing the key alone results in the function key F1..F12. Holding the Fn key and pressing a key outputs the media key. If you want to type a “1” or an “!”, you have to toggle the mode off. It’s confusing, and there is no LED to show what mode it’s in. You probably noticed there is a volume knob in the upper right of the keyboard. This is brilliant! I say that because the media keys I use the most are volume up/down and mute. The volume knob does all three (click to mute/unmute). That one knob takes the place of three media keys, and it’s intuitive. The volume knob has indents, so it clicks when you turn it, making it easy to get the exact volume you want. The only other thing that would have been nice to have is an additional USB port. They would have to build a USB hub into the keyboard for that, but at this price point, it would have been nice of them. There are punch-outs on the back of the keyboard beside the USB port. Kind of looks like maybe they had something like this planned but never implemented it. Despite some minor complaints, this is an awesome keyboard and probably the nicest keyboard I’ve ever owned. This is it if you’re looking for a mechanical keyboard that oozes quality.

Absolutely love this keyboard. Purchased this one for my first gaming PC and could not be happier. I wanted something that was sleek and matched the walnut finish of my PC case and desk and this color looks great. I also needed something that sounded smooth and wasn’t too loud and this meets those needs perfectly.

The only issue I have with it is that the customization of the RGB lights within the keyboard can be kind of a hassle. I had to do it through the VIA website, but once I found VIA it was very easy to change the lighting to my liking.

The feeling overall is great. It’s got a creaminess to it and feels great to type on. Pros: – Compact size and layout if that’s what you want. – Reasonably priced – Overall well designed and built, but could be sturdier. – It functions how I want it to and as was expected. There is software but it’s not healerly needed in my opinion Cons: – Wired only and no option for wireless. – The keycaps are not translucent so the RGB doesn’t fully come through. – It can at times feel a little flimsy. Not a problem overall though. Conclusion: The creamy switches and overall build give for a great typing experience that I recommend. I enjoy using this and while I’m an enthusiast of mechanical keyboards, I do tend to keep coming back to this one for some reason more often. It is hot swappable but I have not found a better switch that I prefer in it yet. Note: The photo and video I posted is of mine which is modified with custom keycaps and does not come standard with it.

Pros: Sounds nice and feels great to type on. Provides a tool to open up the keyboard which is like a guitar pick. Has a volume nob that mutes when pressed down. Two height adjustable. Supports 5 pins Cons: Prone to hand sweat/oil stain. The caps are double-shot but the print of the letters are bad because you can feel the legends and it is ABS. Instead of an entire foam covering the PCB where your switch goes on, it’s a thin foam tape specially for where switches would go.

So far this keyboard had been amazing. It doesn’t have any really bad delay that i have seen on other keyboard. I can still superglide in apex pretty well. I would say change the keycaps though because the ones that come with it aren’t good for gaming at night. The keyboard sounds pretty good for the price and the stabs and switches have all been smooth so far. The knob has a nice tactile turn to it and feels really nice. I have womier pudding keycaps for anyone wanting to buy those. They fit perfectly besides the page down and page up keys. Due be careful when trying to switch the space bar out as i did break a switch when doing that but luckily enough the keyboard came with quite a bit of more switches so all good.

So far I am impressed with this keyboard and its quality. It has a very nice sound out the box and is easier to type with compared to my Razer keyboard. It would have gotten a 5-star rating but the letters can be a little hard to see if you are in a dark or very dim room even with the RBG lighting. That’s not to say the lighting isn’t great because it is, just not great at highlighting the actual letters.
